Porcelain Inlays/Onlays

Yardley, Newtown, and Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Porcelain inlays and onlays are strong, conservative, and highly aesthetic dental restorations. They are made of similar materials and applied in a similar manner as dental fillings. However, they provide more protection than a typical dental filling. Your porcelain inlay or onlay will strengthen a damaged tooth and enable you to address large problems without replacing the entire outer portion of your tooth.

Recommending an Inlay/Onlay

An inlay or onlay is a stronger solution than a filling, but more conservative than a dental crown. If Dr. Kalochie recommends an inlay/onlay, your tooth is significantly weakened and needs help soon. If you delay treatment at this stage, your tooth could be susceptible to breakage or infection, eventually requiring a more extensive and costly procedure to correct the issue.

Porcelain inlays are used to replace tooth structure within the cusp tips of a tooth, while porcelain onlays are used for more extensive damage, when the biting surface of a tooth, including one or more tooth cusps, is compromised.

After a comprehensive review of your dental history and your initial oral health evaluation, Dr. Kalochie will recommend the type of restoration that will best protect your tooth.

The Inlay/Onlay Procedure

If you need porcelain inlay or onlay, you can expect the process to be completed in two visits. During your first appointment, Dr. Jennifer Kalochie prepares your tooth and takes an impression of it, which is sent to our lab partners for use in the design of your inlay/onlay. You are then placed with a temporary restoration to keep your tooth functional and natural looking until your permanent porcelain inlay/onlay is ready.

After your customized restoration is delivered to our office, you will return for the permanent placement. After checking the fit and making any adjustments, Dr. Kalochie bonds the porcelain inlay or onlay in place, making sure your bite is comfortable and the tooth is stable.
